Mirror 04:01
Mirror Lyrics She might get lonely Just a little bit Not that she wants to Seems she has no choice in the matter of fact As it happens She don’t want you around It’s not plain to see She’s more confused Than you are Please believe me I don’t when I don’t why I don’t how I won’t know how I don’t when I don’t why I don’t how I won’t know how When i look into the mirror I might like what I see Maybe, maybe, maybe I might love who I am I might love who I am When i look into the mirror I might like what I see Maybe, maybe, maybe I might love who I am I might love who I am Touch my reflection It’s a mystery Not one that needs a solution Just admiration If i sound crazy Then you must be crazy too I see your lips they move But your words are stuck in side my head I’m more confused than you are Please believe me When i look into the mirror I might like what I see Maybe, maybe, maybe I might love who I am I might love who I am When i look into the mirror I might like what I see Maybe, maybe, maybe I might love who I am I might love who I am I don’t when I don’t why I don’t how I won’t know how I don’t when I don’t why I don’t how I won’t know how I don’t know When i look into the mirror I might like what I see Maybe, maybe, maybe I might love who I am I might love who I am When i look into the mirror I might like what I see Maybe, maybe, maybe I might love who I am I might love who I am

Walk with yourself Oh Stay Stay where you are now Come no further Down this road With all your lies You’ll find that You’re not welcome anymore Oh Pray Pray for your soul now I’m no longer By your side and in your mind You’ll know it was the lies that set me free Oh while she slowly slithers away Just think of what she’ll say So take your time Take your time Now Lay Lay down slowly Breathe in deep Let the past be memories You’ll call them In your sleep for years to come Show me what you Expect me to be If you can’t listen Would you rather I hurt Than see me happy

Worth It 04:08
Worth It Lyrics Ooooh Ooooh When this day is over And the curtains drawn When the night is yearning For the call of dawn Tired Days and weary nights Clear blue skies and starlit eyes Will we ever know Will we ever know If it was all worth it Will we ever know Will we ever know If it was all worth it Then I close my eyes When I hear the voices Singing through the pain When I feel the humour Seeping through my veins Hazy thoughts and candid law Mirror mirror, who’s in awe? Will we ever know Will we ever know If it was all worth it Will we ever know Will we ever know If it was all worth it Will we ever know Will we ever know If it was all worth it Will we ever know Will we ever know If it was all worth it Then I close my eyes Ooooh Ooooh Then I close my eyes Will we ever know Will we ever know If it was all worth it Will we ever know Will we ever know If it was all worth it Then I close my eyes

Carry You 04:14
Carry Lyrics Pick you up I wanna go I’ll carry you so very slow tonight If there’s something I can do Just let me know I wanna make it right The load you bare Upon your back Is heavier On your own You have no choice but to stand still Grounded with no will to move on And I know there’s still so much to do And everyone needs somebody to be strong So please don’t panic If your feet can’t manage When your ground’s unsteady I will carry you Though it’s a dangerous passage And I got my own baggage I’ll build this carriage so I can carry you Step aside I wanna know What kind of war Is playing on your mind Anything that I can do I’ll stop the noise So we can sleep tonight The ground is bare They’ve turned their backs You stand alone expecting the attack You hold your breath Wait for the kill Open your eyes Your heart is beating still And I know there’s still so much to do And everyone needs somebody to be strong So please don’t panic If your feet can’t manage When your ground’s unsteady I will carry you Though it’s a dangerous passage And I got my own baggage I’ll build this carriage so I can carry you Mmmmmm Mmmmmm So please don’t panic If your feet can’t manage When your ground’s unsteady I will carry you Though it’s a dangerous passage And I got my own baggage I’ll build this carriage so I can carry you

Last Stop 03:12
Last Stop Lyrics It’s a one way street into the parking lot And the lanes line double wide Littered with headlights and toe bars Overhanging orange light and dark skies The sand and the rocks nestled in the green mangroves Dry low tide ocean floor high tide Leaves and branches and over reaching arches hide a humble beast Ooooooh she sings as she walks along the water top Ooooh will this be her last stop Sitting at the edge of the floating plastic A bucket with a line and a dog Waiting with patience like time of the ancients and the wind unwind wound down The salt in the air solidifies on the skin and the skin harvests the sun The smell is of hunger and the taste of not long now the hunt has begun Oooh she sings as she throws a line along the top Oooh will this be her last stop When the sun dies slowly and it’s blood paints the sky As the clouds hold in their tears White cockatoos fly calling in masses To Land on the salt water trees The evenings are a time when a noise fills the air With the word on the ocean and the creeks Listen in closely, there’s much to be soaked in Like the thick humidity Oooh she sings as she sits besides the rocky bay Oooh this is where she’ll stay

about

It’s been nearly three years since Caiti Baker released her solo debut, “Zinc”, and that time of fermentation has provided a heady brew in the form of her second full-length LP, “Mary of the North.” Caiti and her creative partner James Mangohig have been honing their craft together for over a decade, from the now-defunct duo Sietta in which they created sultry electro/soul jams that sounded just as at home in a seedy underground club as they did on daytime commercial radio, through “Zinc” (as well as the ‘B6’ and ‘Dust’ EPs that chased it), to arrive now at their most fully-realised, cohesive and accomplished work to date.

Right from the get-go Caiti has always had one of THOSE voices: it’s like oak, like bourbon. It effortlessly glides and rises, smoky and strong through the expansive, future-primitive sonic landscape conceived solely by producer/musician James Mangohig. The duo’s ambitious music draws on blues, jazz, electronica and R&B to build something which refuses any attempt at easy genre classification, a unique fusion of electronica and acoustica with a lush production that instantly raises the bar for all original recorded music to come from the Territory. And on that note, the songs on this exceptional record could only have been come from the Northern Territory; unique sounds from a unique part of Australia, born of the NT’s vistas and the people who populate them. Caiti and James have stated this music was written while watching from afar as the nation was on fire in late 2019 and early 2020, and it does surely resound with a strong vibe of beginnings, endings, and an overall sense of something happening and things never being the same again afterwards.

The nine-song collection opens with “No More”, establishing the mood with dusty trip-hop beats, tremolo guitars, and a lyrical narrative about deserting everything one has ever known to go careening off into the unknown in search of some elusive grail. “Mirror” marries Manhattan jazz-bar piano and brushed drums with Caiti’s singing as playful as it is commanding, leading up to an anthemic and instantly-memorable chorus. “Walk with Yourself” is pure Lynch/Tarantino-soundtrack in waiting with its layered vocals, waltzing rhythm and spectrum of guitar sounds, while the upbeat single “Green Eyes” is a perfect dry-season soundtrack, all hand claps and whistle solos and upright bass and metaphorical-unless-they-aren’t lyrics about wanting a cup of tea
with Mary.

The mood audibly darkens as the album progresses, as the listener arrives at “Worth It” with its clanking industrial percussion and found sounds from within the walls of Darwin Correctional Centre, Caiti joined on the chorus by 15 of the women who occupy the facility to chilling and thrilling effect. Then comes the gorgeous acoustic hymnal “Carry You”, the solemn and ominous lowdown of “She’s Cruel”, and the I-will-make-my-home-here resolve of “Last Stop”, which rang particularly true for me on a personal note as I write these words on the 23rd anniversary of my own arrival in Darwin. Not since Dave Garnham’s “This Town” has the experience of arriving in and adopting this city been so wonderfully immortalised in song.

It all leads inexorably towards the album’s finale and centrepiece, “Welcome to the Aftermath.” Here we have a dark, melancholy melody, one of Mangohig’s sickest-ever beats (shades on for this one, seriously), Caiti’s vocals at their most formidable, and a sweeping, bass-heavy arrangement that properly imbues the piece with a grandiosity worthy of a Bond theme. “What a time to be alive,” Caiti sings, again and again, and you can interpret that sentiment any number of ways: as I sit here, it can’t help but feel relevant to the time of unprecedented fragmentation we’re currently living in. It ends the album dramatically and beautifully.

Caiti Baker’s “Mary of the North” is an engrossing record of richness and passion that deserves to be heard and owned by anyone with both speakers and an appreciation for poetic, soulful music that goes bone-deep. An album born of the classics that seems destined to stand alongside them.
